Executive Blog

I hope everyone was able to let off some steam and let out their crazy dance moves at Snowball this past weekend!  With campaigning now under way and midterms soon approaching, it would be an understatement to say it is a busy time of the year. However, feel free to take advantage of our Lazaridis Students’ Society services, such as Coffee Break and multiple club events, to take a break whenever needed.

As well, if you are looking to represent our undergraduate community, gain experience, and follow your passion, I would suggest that you apply to be a part of the Lazaridis Students’ Society. All five Vice President positions are open, so be sure to check them out now at http://lazsoc.ca/hiring/.

If you still have some free time on your hands (lucky you!) and are looking to represent the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at a conference and / or competition, we are still accepting applications. Did I mention we subsidize up to 50% of the cost!? Find out more here: http://lazsoc.ca/conferences-competition-subsidy/

Kind regards,

Ryan Price
Vice Presidet of Finance

Meet Jonathan Okun, Head T.A.

JonathanOkun

Education:

Wilfrid Laurier University, BBA ’16

Notable Work Experience:
Staff Accountant, Ernst and Young (2015)
Audit and Assurance Co-op Associate, PricewaterhouseCoopers (2014)

Jonathan Okun is a fourth year BBA student, who happens to hold one of the most coveted extra-curricular roles on campus: Head Teaching Assistant for BU111/121. Upon attending Laurier Day as a highschool student in 2012, he was drawn to the school and the Business and Economics program. Nearly four years later, Jonathan has achieved a great university career. With co-op terms at two of the notable “Big 4” firms and immense on-campus involvement with the Lazaridis Students’ Society and SBESS prove that Jonathan has set himself up for strong post-graduate success. In fact, he’s scored a full time job at Ernst and Young and plans to pursue his CPA designation.

What motivated you to become Head TA?
After being a T.A. last year, I thought that this role would be a unique opportunity for me to lead a team of the most hardworking and engaged 3rd/4th year BBA students. As well, this was my chance to really have an impact on how first year students experience the BBA program. Being able to continually improve the way students learn at Laurier has been extremely rewarding.

What is one piece of advice you can offer students who want to succeed in BU111/121?
Work hard and don’t be afraid to ask for help! There are a tremendous amount of resources available for you to succeed. Your TAs & professors are just the tip of the iceberg –  they can also direct you to everything else that’s available.

What are qualities of outstanding students in your BU111/121 labs?
Students who demonstrate critical thinking and insight beyond the “surface”. They think about concepts in a deeper way, applying them to real life situations, asking the “so what” and “what if” questions that really help them engage with what they learn.

What are some skills or tools you have gained as Head T.A.?

  •  Leadership – I’ve had the pleasure (and challenge!) of leading a team of 40 T.A.s
  • A deeper understanding of business fundamentals –  They say that teaching others is the best way to learn something yourself!

Who are business leaders that inspire you?
To be perfectly honest, I don’t necessarily aspire to be like anyone else, and I don’t “idolize” business leaders, so I don’t have a great answer for this question! I really encourage students to follow their own path and do things their own way.

Each week, look forward to a Weekly Feature with exclusive Q+A’s and interviews with business leaders, alumni, and faculty. You won’t find this information anywhere else! Have a question you want to ask? Submit yours today!

Who will be the next Lazaridis Students’ Society President?

This week, two candidates have launched their campaigns for President. We encourage Lazaridis students to check out the platforms of each Presidential candidate – or get to know them in person! Both candidates will be campaigning in the Peters Foyer during this week.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Cast Your Vote: Wednesday, February 3 and Thursday, February 4
Open Forum: Monday, February 1 at 2:30 PM in the KPMG Atrium
