After four years of unforgettable memories, crazy adventures, and late night studying at Wilfrid Laurier, Katy Hung graduated with a dual honours degree in Sociology and Communications. Since graduating, she’s embarked on a career that has spanned many different top tier companies that include – Ipsos Reid, LoyaltyOne (Air Miles), AOL Canada and now Google. She’s worked in quantitative and qualitative market research, customer analytics, and most recently has spent the past 3.5 years of her career in the digital advertising field. Today at Google she works as an Ad Operations Brand Specialist where she manages the successful execution of video ads featured on YouTube for several large advertisers that include Tim Horton’s, Subway, Coke and Molson.
Skills/tools you gained while at Laurier?
Relationship management: Growing and developing meaningful relationships around you and the ability to navigate and work through challenging relationships to reach an end goal
Teamwork & cohesion: Figuring out the best way to work well with team members (especially with different personalities), leveraging people’s strengths, distributing work evenly and having strong team communication
Favourite aspects of working at Google?
The people – I feel very privileged to be surrounded by so many people with such rich and diverse backgrounds. Everyone works really hard here, but they also carve out time to have amazing personal hobbies and interests that I feel quite inspired by as well. Also can’t forget the FOOD! We have an award winning culinary staff that nourishes us with the most amazing food I’ve ever had. There’s not a day that goes by when I don’t think about how lucky and fortunate I am to work here.
Why would you encourage students to pursue positions in the digital media industry? Or become more interested in technology in general?
The digital media industry is constantly changing and evolving and that’s what makes it so exciting. You can be in the industry for decades, but with today’s rapid advances in technology and the way advertisers buy and spend digitally, it has the ability to put seasoned veterans back on the same playing field as people who are only 2-3 years into their career. That’s what makes it so scary but exhilarating!
What is one piece of advice that you can lend to young people entering the business world?
Build good habits early on in your career – this will be tremendously helpful later on. Wake up early, prioritize and project manage your time wisely, build good relationships with everyone around you, work REALLY hard so that people associate your name with a strong work ethic. Don’t ever assume anything will be handed to you!
Who are business leaders that inspire you?
Jessica Alba – co-founder of Honest Company, Emily Weiss – founder of Into The Gloss and Glossier, and Elizabeth Holmes – founder/CEO of Theranos
Each week, look forward to a Weekly Feature with exclusive Q+A’s and interviews with business leaders, alumni, and faculty. You won’t find this information anywhere else! Have a question you want to ask? Submit yours today!
Coffee Break returns! The Lazaridis Students’ Society will be giving back to students by providing free coffee and snacks.
