Executive Blog

Hello, my name is Kyle Somerville and I am the Vice President of Club’s and Association’s for the Lazaridis Students’ Society.

One of my major roles is to provide opportunities to both students as well as members of the Clubs and Associations community. This upcoming weekend, my team and I are running our annual Clubs Roundtable. This event brings together student leaders from Lazaridis Students’ Society-affiliated clubs and associations for a full day of interactive sessions focused on club improvement. Increasing event relevance and the value provided to members through club activities are among topics discussed.

For those not involved in clubs specifically, I encourage you to check out the Lazaridis Students’ Society App to see all of the upcoming club events and opportunities that are available! There are plenty of exciting opportunities coming in the next few weeks!

Aside from this, midterms are just around the corner. The next few weeks will be a time to buckle down and grab that Pumpkin Spiced Latte. Although, it may seem like it is never ending, Halloween is under two weeks away, so go on a study break to find that perfect costume. And for those of you on co-op, the half way point is just a few days away.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions! Best of luck on midterms!

What’s your dream job? Who would you be working for, what would your role be, and where would you be living?

Ideally, my dream job would be to own and operate an asset management firm or hedge fund, primarily being focused on a specific strategy with partners that I work well with. Doesn’t have to be anything too big, just enough for me to have something I can be proud of and work towards.

I would love to live in a big city like Toronto, New York, Boston, Chicago, LA, or perhaps somewhere I would never have thought of.

I understand that it presents a significant challenge and it is hard to make it, however, I think it would be an incredible opportunity to work towards something of my own!

What are your best study tips?

Honestly, repetition is the name of the game. Focus on actually learning the material by completing readings and doing your homework throughout the term. By the time exams comes around, it’s a simply refresher! It’s definitely easier said than done.

Beyond that, the only way to do well is to put time in. Try to schedule daily goals or subjects that you want to accomplish. Some people can cram it all into a night and pull off a 90%.

I am NOT one of those people.

If you were given a million dollars and 24 hours to spend it, what would you do?

  1. Use half of it to start up a small fund of my own. Start my investing in a diverse portfolio of names that I have already been looking at, keeping some cash on the side for potential opportunities.
  2. The other half would go towards the most outrageous, wild, and memorable Phils night ever…

What’s one word best describes you?

Where’s your favourite place to go out in Waterloo?

Anywhere my friends are.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
