What was the hardest adjustment from High School to University?

The biggest difference between High School and University is the level of independence given to students. I believe that the hardest adjustments revolve around living on your own instead of with your family. At first you are excited about your new freedom, but quickly realize that the dishes have to be done, the bed has to be made, and the garbage must be taken out. When you inevitably catch whatever virus is making its way around campus, you have to suck it up and take care of it yourself. It sucks, but I guess it’s just part of growing up. The second hardest adjustment is the style of teaching in university. Especially in first year, the classes are often large and there is not much individual attention. One lecture in University can cover the same amount of material as 2 weeks in High School, so I really had to stay on top of things.

Where are your favourite places to study on campus?

I know it’s weird, but I actually have different favourite places for different seasons. For example, the atrium next to the concourse in the Arts Building is perfect in the winter, but if you step foot in there during the warmer months, prepare to sweat…a lot. Other than that, I love to sit in the Laz atrium to do quizzes and assignments. For exams, I am one of those people who doesn’t step foot on campus and hides away in her room all day. I love my bed so much, I even purchased a lap desk so I can do work and study in it.

Did you join any clubs, if so, which one, and how was your experience with it?

Yes! I joined The Advertising Project last year as an executive member. I’m known to be a creative person and wanted to make use of my skills at school. I couldn’t find any design or fine arts courses at Laurier, so when I stumbled across the position of graphic designer on Laurier’s only advertising club, I knew I had to sign up. The Advertising Project has both a student and client side, but I mostly dealt with creating designs for local Kitchener-Waterloo businesses. I got to meet tons of people who helped develop my graphic design skills. The club was really understanding of my busy schedule, so I never found myself struggling to balance both my extra-curricular and academic life. This year, I am fortunate to be the Vice President of Creative! I am excited to lead a team of talented, out-of-the-box thinkers who have a passion for design. I can’t wait to see what the upcoming school year has in store!

What are some of your hobbies, or what do you wish you spent more time doing?

As I mentioned before, I am quite creative and love to paint! My favourite thing to paint is portraits, and one day I hope to paint portraits that look so real, you would think they are pictures. Unfortunately, it is hard to keep up with that hobby in University since I lack the supplies, space, and time to do it. Other than that, I am absolutely in love with my pet rabbit Snickerz. I’ve had him for seven years and have been lucky enough to have him keep me going through University! He is definitely a great stress reliever.

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?

Psh… who even owns an iPod anymore??? I am an avid Spotify user and I would say my most played song there would be No Scrubs by TLC (I love the 90s). According to my iTunes, which I have not touched in years, my most played song is For The Nights I Can’t Remember by Hedley.

If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?

I would have loved to go back and see The Beatles perform live.
