In your opinion, what is the BEST thing about Laurier? What makes it unique?
The size of the school is definitely the best part, hands down. The furthest you will ever have to walk is 15 minutes, max. Having everything so close to each other on campus is amazing because not only do you get to sleep in longer before class, but you also never have to trek to campus during the cold Waterloo winters. In addition to this, the students at Laurier are amazing, and having a smaller population creates more of a community feel. I will rarely ever walk through campus without running into somebody I know, and as a very social individual, that is paradise.
What are your study tips and tricks?
Stay up to date with your readings/notes. As much as that is a cookie cutter answer, it is extremely valuable. There is nothing worse than sitting at your desk the night before an exam and writing notes on four different chapters. Even though you’re reading and writing, it’s isn’t going to help you learn. Get your notes done in advance, have them ready for when you want to study, and then spend time learning that material ten times over.
Another thing that I love to do is read my notes out loud. It’s a peculiar tactic, and my roommates absolutely hate it, but I’ve been doing it since highschool and I don’t plan on stopping. Actually having to explain out loud why something happens or how something works is much more effective than reading it off a paper and repeating it back in your head, even if you need to talk to yourself.
What are some fun things to do when the weather gets colder around campus in your opinion?
One of my best memories from first year was during a massive snowstorm in January. We rallied up about 15 guys, went to alumni field, and played a game of tackle football. It may have not been the safest of activities, but it sure was a great time. Another thing that my roommates and I are planning on doing this year is going snowboarding. We didn’t have the opportunity last year because we lacked storage space, but now we have a house instead of that dinky residence room which makes it easier to plan fun events.
Favourite restaurant in Waterloo?
I don’t know if I would consider this a restaurant, but Twice the Deal Pizza is currently on my speed dial. If I had a dollar for everytime I’ve ordered their pizza, I would probably spend it on more pizza. If you ever want to feed a large group for a cheap price with free delivery, you call Twice the Deal and order the Godzilla Deal. Two XL’s with three toppings each for 20 bucks. It doesn’t get much better than that.
What is your favourite sport to watch/favourite sports player?
Hockey, hands down. I was born into a Maple Leafs family and have been watching their games ever since I came home from the hospital 19 years ago. My current favourite player is Nazem Kadri. I think he’s a player who has managed to overcome a lot of adversity and criticism and develop into a very valuable part of the team. Watching Leafs games is a concrete activity in my schedule that won’t ever be moved, and I keep a special eye out for #43 always.
What is your dream vacation, and what would you do while you were there?
I have always been in love with the beach. There is nothing more I enjoy than bathing in the Caribbean sun. With that however, I think my dream vacation is not one I could plan out, and not one that is on a beach. When I graduate I want to put some clothes and my passport into a backpack and head for Europe, and see where life takes me. Sweden, Norway, Greece, France, Spain, wherever; I just want to bounce around Europe with a couple of buddies and explore for a month or two.
How have you gotten involved at all in your time at school? What would your advice to first years be about clubs and associations?
In my first year I joined Sports Management Laurier’s executive team as an events associate, and a year later I can say with certainty that it was the smartest thing I’ve done at Laurier. I’m currently VP of Events for the club, and the friendships I have made and the opportunities I have had because of this club are indescribable. I highly encourage any first years, or anybody at all for that matter, to get involved in the clubs and associations community.
